Institute for Society and Economy (ISE)

The Institute for Society and Economy (ISE) is a non-profit organization established in 2017 by the Development and Policies Research Center (DEPOCEN). Its mission is to conduct non-profit projects in health, the economy, and society, provide high-quality evidence to inform policy decisions, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and advance public health. ISE has now gained a reputation in policy research and consultancy due to its wide range of researchers and areas of work.

In 2023, ISE was awarded a prestigious research grant from The National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED) to implement a public health project in 2023-2025 “Food Consumption and Nutrition in Vietnamese Households: Trends, Impacts, and Implications for the Food Supply System”. We also conducted the project “Illicit Trade Study in Vietnam” was funded by the University of Illinois to estimate the prevalence of illicit cigarette trade and compare it to a 2012 study. From 2018 to 2021, with funding from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK), we conducted a longitudinal study to monitor smoker behavior and the tobacco industry’s pricing strategies. In 2019, we conducted a discrete choice experiment to study smokers’ brand switching behavior and estimate the impact of specific excise taxes on local, international, and illicit cigarette brands. In 2022, we conducted a monitoring project funded by CTFK to provide evidence on violations of Tobacco Advertising and Promotion, specifically targeting children and encouraging smoking.

Optimal Risk Sharing Under Limited Commitment: Evidence From Rural Vietnam

Xuất bản:

We use panel data from a household survey conducted in Vietnam to analyze the effectiveness of informal risk sharing arrangements in protecting household consumption from idiosyncratic income shocks. We focus on the effects of reported harvest shocks...

Price Elasticity Estimates for Cigarette Demand in Vietnam

Xuất bản:

In this paper, we analyze a complete demand system to estimate the price elasticity for cigarette demand in Vietnam. Following Deaton (1990), we build a spatial panel using cross sectional household survey data. We consider a model of simultaneous choice...

The Determinants of Private Transfers in Rural Vietnam

Xuất bản:

We use the Vietnam Living Standard Survey conducted in 1993 and in 1998 to analyze the determinants of private transfers among rural farmers. Private transfers are widespread and important relative to pre-transfer income levels of recipients in both years....

Sales Tax: Specific or Ad Valorem Tax for a Non-renewable Resource?

Xuất bản:

This paper shows that for a time-independent specific tax and a time-independent ad valorem tax that induce the same competitive equilibrium in the Hotelling model of resource extraction, the ad valorem tax yields a higher level of discounted tax revenues...

Optimization incentive and relative riskiness in experimental coordination games

Xuất bản:

We compare the experimental results of three stag-hunt games. In contrast to Battalio et al. (2001), our design keeps the riskiness ratio of the payoff-dominant and the risk-dominant strategies at a constant level as the optimisation premium is increased....

Xuất bản:

An important goal of Millennium Development Goals that Vietnam committed is to reduce the overall and food poverty. Although Vietnam has achieved remarkable reduction in poverty during the recent years, Vietnam might not achieve its MDG on poverty reduction...
