The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) implemented by the EU plays a pivotal role in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and has profound implications for businesses engaged in the production and export/import of goods. CBAM is an initiative put forth by the EU to ensure that imported products meet environmental standards and adhere to greenhouse gas regulations similar to those imposed on domestically manufactured goods.
CBAM is exerting a significant influence on export-oriented businesses across various nations, with Vietnam being no exception. To comply with CBAM, export enterprises must enhance resource and energy efficiency, minimize greenhouse gas emissions, and integrate environmental protection measures into their production processes, aligning with the stringent requirements set by the EU. Moreover, the government and relevant stakeholders must institute supportive policies and assistance programs to aid businesses in navigating and adapting to these transformative changes.
The Policy Discussion No. 01/2024 by the DEPOCEN research group focuses on understanding the impact of CBAM on export businesses in Vietnam and its connection to the escalating challenges of climate change. Emphasis is placed on analyzing the effects of CBAM on macroeconomic indicators and Vietnam’s export sectors.
