The survey on Sanitation and hygiene in Ben Tre province.

Overview

The objective of the baseline survey is to collect the necessary data to prepare for the design and implementation of East Meets West’s (EMW) research activities in Ben Tre province from March 2017 to March 2018. The necessary information and indicators to be collected includes (i) natural and socio-economic conditions, and the mechanisms, policies and related factors directly affecting sanitation and hygiene in the province; (ii) the current sanitation and hygiene situation in the province: the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges; (iii) the current situation and characteristics of the supply chain of latrine construction services in 25 project communes; (iv) the characteristics/features of households that already had or that have not had hygiene latrines yet and their viewpoints on building hygienic latrines and the demand for loans (credit or pay by installment); (v) information on the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies’ (VBSP) credit sources and other credit sources for households to build hygienic latrines in the locality, and the plan of credit sources in the future; (vi) information about the funding sources of local governments, foreign programs and projects that support households in building hygienic latrines (including the information about the methods of support, beneficiaries, funding amounts and implementation units); (vii) Recommendations on the feasibility of providing installment loans for households to build hygienic latrines. The survey was conducted in 25 project communes in Cho Lach, Mo Cay Bac and Ba Tri districts of Ben Tre province. A combination of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods (including in-depth interviews and focus group discussions) was applied. The quantitative survey was conducted for households without hygienic latrines. The in-depth interview method was applied with the stakeholders at the district level including representatives of the Women’s Union, the Preventive Medicine Center and the VBSP, and at the communal level including representatives of local authorities, the Women’s Union, service providers/masons, and retailers and credit officers of the VBSP. Some households with hygienic latrines were also invited to participating in focus group discussions.This survey was interviewed 1254 households have not hygienic latrines, 22 in-depth interviews with stakeholders and 14 FGD with households having hygienic latrine
