Overview
The Center for Development and Integration (CDI) implemented the project “Promoting rights and voices of migrant workers towards better welfare and working conditions in industrial zones” in two large industrial parks (IPs) of Bac Ninh province, including Yen Phong IP and Que Vo IP. This 5-year-project aims to identify violations of labor rights and to support migrant workers to speak up and demand social security and better working conditions. The project has three specific objectives: i) Migrant workers working in the field of electronics are better organized and networked to protect their interests; ii) Migrant workers, especially female, and social organizations have increased capacity to influence Labor and Wage policies; iii) The private sector (businesses) and other stakeholders will increase their support for migrant workers so that they have better working conditions, especially improved occupational safety and health condition. DEPOCEN was contracted to conduct the baseline survey for this project, which included: i) Gathering basic information on demographic characteristics and socio-economic characteristics of migrant workers in Yen Phong IP and Que Vo IP, ii) KAP (Knowledge – Attitude – Practices) survey on the right to access to social security and the right to decent working conditions, iii) Assessment of the status quo (accessibility, quality, demand) of social security and working conditions of migrant workers from various perspectives, iv) Identifying stakeholders’ readiness to take part in the project, and v) Provide recommendations for successful implementation of the project over the next 5 years. The study was done with a quantitative survey of over 200 migrant workers, of which two-third were female, in the 2 IPs in Bac Ninh, and a series of 25 in-depth interviews with local governments, IP management units, firms and other stakeholders.
