Using propensity score matching techniques and ?rm-level panel data for<br \/>\nChinese manufacturing ?rms over the 1998-2007 period, we ?nd strong evidence of domestic ?rms<br \/>\nself-selecting into export markets with higher productivity ex ante, and enhanced productivity<br \/>\nex post. No such pattern is observed among foreign-invested ?rms. We also ?nd that both<br \/>\ndomestic and foreign new exporters exploit China?s low labor costs and specialize in their core<br \/>\ncompetence, that is, ?rms become less capital-intensive after exporting, relative to the matched<br \/>\nnon-exporting counterparts in the same industry. To rationalize these results that contrast<br \/>\nwith most ?ndings in the existing literature, we develop a variant of the multi-product model<br \/>\nof Bernard, Redding, and Schott (2010) to consider varying capital intensity across products.<br \/>\nUsing transaction-level export data, we ?nd evidence that Chinese exporters add new products<br \/>\nthat are more labor-intensive than existing products and drop products that are less labor-<br \/>\nintensive, supporting the model predictions. Firms with a bigger decline in capital intensity<br \/>\nafter exporting are found to have a larger increase in measured TFP<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"template":"","cate_publications":[],"author_publications":[1976,1977,1978],"topic_publications":[],"class_list":["post-9342","publications","type-publications","status-publish","hentry","author_publications-yue-ma","author_publications-heiwai-tang","author_publications-yifan-zhang"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/vi\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/publications\/9342","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/vi\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/publications"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/vi\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/publications"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/vi\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9342"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"cate_publications","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/vi\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/cate_publications?post=9342"},{"taxonomy":"author_publications","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/vi\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/author_publications?post=9342"},{"taxonomy":"topic_publications","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/vi\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/topic_publications?post=9342"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
