Using data from the NELS2000 and<br \/>\nemploying quantile regression techniques, we find two important results. First, the<br \/>\ngaps in maths, reading and science test scores among ethnic groups vary across the<br \/>\nconditional quantiles of the measured test scores. Specifically, Blacks and Hispanics<br \/>\ntend to fare worse in their attainment at higher quantiles, particularly in science.<br \/>\nSecondly, the effects of family background factors such as parental education and<br \/>\nfather’s occupation also vary across quantiles of the test score distribution. The<br \/>\nimplication of these findings is that the commonly made broad distinction on whether<br \/>\none is from a privileged\/disadvantaged ethnic and\/or family background may not tell<br \/>\nthe whole story that the academic attainment discourse has to note. Interventions<br \/>\naimed at closing the gap in attainment between Whites and minorities may need to<br \/>\ntarget higher levels of the test score distribution.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"template":"","cate_publications":[],"author_publications":[1572,1573],"topic_publications":[],"class_list":["post-8746","publications","type-publications","status-publish","hentry","author_publications-getinet-astatike-haile","author_publications-anh-ngoc-nguyen"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/vi\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/publications\/8746","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/vi\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/publications"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/vi\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/publications"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/vi\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=8746"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"cate_publications","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/vi\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/cate_publications?post=8746"},{"taxonomy":"author_publications","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/vi\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/author_publications?post=8746"},{"taxonomy":"topic_publications","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/vi\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/topic_publications?post=8746"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
