These “shocks” affect food<br \/>\nimporters and exporters alike. Vietnam is a major exporter of rice, and rice is also a key item in domestic<br \/>\nproduction, employment and consumption. Accordingly, rice price shocks from the world market have<br \/>\ngeneral equilibrium impacts and as such, their implications for household welfare are not known ex ante.<br \/>\nIn this paper we present a framework for understanding the direct and indirect welfare effects of a global<br \/>\nmarket shock of this kind. We quantify transmission of the shock from global indicator prices to<br \/>\ndomestic markets. Then we use an applied general equilibrium model to simulate the economic effects of<br \/>\nthe price changes. A recursive mapping to a nationally representative household living standards survey<br \/>\npermits us to identify in detail the ceteris paribus effects of the shock on household incomes and welfare.<br \/>\nIn this analysis, interregional and intersectoral labor market adjustments emerge as key channels<br \/>\ntransmitting the effects of global price shocks across sectors and among households.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"template":"","cate_publications":[],"author_publications":[1942,1943,1944,1945],"topic_publications":[],"class_list":["post-9301","publications","type-publications","status-publish","hentry","author_publications-ian-coxhead","author_publications-vu-hoang-linh-and-le-dong-tam","author_publications-ian-coxhead-en","author_publications-vu-hoang-linh-and-le-dong-tam-en"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/publications\/9301","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/publications"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/publications"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9301"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"cate_publications","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/cate_publications?post=9301"},{"taxonomy":"author_publications","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/author_publications?post=9301"},{"taxonomy":"topic_publications","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/depocen.org\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/topic_publications?post=9301"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
