Global Value Chains Qualitative Study in Vietnam

Overview
As part of a program of wider analytical work which aims to support competitiveness and job creation within Global Value Chains (GVCs), the World Bank Group carries out a study in Vietnam to capture the determinants of participation in GVCs and its implications for local economy. The value chain study focuses on understanding and quantifying the nature of: i) sourcing and sales strategies, ii) jobs and skills requirements in the value chain, iii) use of technology, management practices, working conditions and standards, iv) linkages and dependencies across the chain, v) the opportunities and challenges facing firms, and vi) firms’ strategic responses. It should result in action plans aimed at improving the competitive position of local firms and the overall efficiency of the value system, while putting emphasis on job creation and earnings growth, in particular through linking firms more effectively into competitive value chains. The assignment includes three major components: i) completion of value chains mapping, ii) implementation of semi-structured qualitative interviews over a selection of stakeholders, iii) preparation of a report with detailed findings and evaluation of the analyzed value chains.
