Overview

The project aims to design and conduct a discrete choice experiment with smokers to measure their willingness to pay for cigarettes in general, and for different specific cigarette brands in particular to understand their potential brand-switching and smoking-quitting behavior when cigarette prices increase by different amounts. It also compares the impacts of different specific tax rates on brand-switching and quitting behavior, and estimate the optimal value that could encourage smokers to reduce cigarette consumption and/or quit smoking. The experiment is implemented along with a cigarette consumption household survey. The survey covers a total of over 1,200 smokers (400 smokers in each of the three socio-economic regions, North, Central and South) across the country. Target participant pool was males and females aged 18 or older who were smoking cigarettes at least once per week, and in the last three months at the time of the survey. Multi-stage clustered and stratified sampling was used to randomly select participants.
