Matthew Scougall

Position: Environmental Research and Project Officer
Matthew Scougall will be spending  18 months working as an Environmental Research and Project Officer in Vietnam with the Development and Policies Research Centre (DEPOCEN). DEPOCEN performs research on development and policy issues relating to socio economic and poverty issues. Matthew will be using his knowledge and skills to strengthen DEPOCEN's projects relating to climate change, environmental sustainability and natural resource management


MARY POSMAN, a third year undergraduate student from William Smith College. She is working towards a degree in History and Public Policy, with a focus on modern world history and international relations. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with DEPOCEN on her term abroad in Vietnam and looks forward to learning more about Vietnam’s recent economic growth and development.

Hien Tran Cong

Position: Economic Analyst
Hien will be working as a DEPOCEN research officer for 12 months as an Australian Youth Ambassador for Development. His main responsibilities include providing support to DEPOCEN staff in economic research, with a specific focus on the analysis of the Vietnamese economy. Hien holds a Bachelor of Commerce, with Honours in Economics and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from UNSW and has spent the past three years working as a macroeconomic forecaster for the Australian Treasury.

Nguyen Thi Hoa

Position: Economic Analyst
Nguyen Thi Hoa is an economic analyst at DEPOCEN. Her main responsibilities are to carry out market research and to assist on-going projects.  Her forte is quantitative research, data aggregation and analysis. She graduated with Highest Distinction from Foreign Trade University, majoring in International Business Economics.


DAN NAULT is currently an undergraduate student at Union College in Schenectady NY.He is working towards a degree in history and political science and is primarily focusing his studies in 20th century USA history. Dan is in Vietnam on a school sponsored term abroad program and is excited to work closely with DEPOCEN at their office in Hanoi before returning to the USA in December.


Her hometown is Trumbull, CT USA. She attends Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York where she majors in Public Policy Studies and minor in Biology. She studied abroad in Vietnam to learn Vietnamese and photography, to have an internship at DEPOCEN. Her hobbies are running, basketball, and reading.


He is a mathematics major and economics minor at Union College in Schenectady, New York. He is from Troy, New York. He came to Vietnam as part of a study abroad program in the fall of 2009. During his time at DEPOCEN, he contributed to the team by assisting in the research for papers put out by DEPOCEN and assisting the staff in English


She is twenty years old and she grew up in New Jersey. Currently, she is a full time student at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. she is a double major in Anthropology and Environmental Studies. She chose to study abroad in Vietnam in the fall to gain knowledge about a way of life

Phuong Dang Ngoc Minh

Position: Research assistant
In this good environment of DEPOCEN, she is trying her best to improve her knowledge and gain more experience. Phuong Dang Ngoc Minh is now doing her part-time job in DEPOCEN. Her main responsibility is to participate in doing assistant work such as contacting to schedule interviews, importing data, translating and supporting in conducting a survey

Position: Researcher

Many aspects of economics and public policy interest Kirby. She has recently contributed to projects in the areas of natural resource management and social policy and has previously enjoyed working on development economics issues.

He’s working as a part-time research assistant at DEPOCEN. His main responsibilities include translating research documents, designing data entry form and complimenting data entry.

Martin Gould

Position: Research Officer

Martin is a researcher at DEPOCEN. He graduated from Melbourne University before working for the federal government in Australia.

Ngan Le Thi

Position: Researcher assistant
Ngan Le Thi works as an Assistant Researcher at Development and Policies Research Center. She supports the project team in desk research, making interview arrangements and organizing workshops. Ngan is taking part in the project “Supporting the monitoring of aid effectiveness from a gender perspective in Vietnam” funded by the UN-INSTRAW (a part of UN Women) and the project “The 5 year business plan for ShanTuyet tea production in Nghe An province” , funded by Oxfam HK
